A NY Times blog says that Dick Wolf is determined to break his show’s tie with ‘Gunsmoke’ as the longest running TV series. That desire must be strong: it was reported today in Variety and in a few other sources that NBC Universal is now shopping the original Law & Order to Turner Broadcasting.

NBC Universal owns the rights to the series, so there’s a good reason for them to not turn off the tap; the show is still popular in its various spin-offs, and Dick Wolf is probably a producer you want to help and work with if at all possible. As we reported in a short note the other day, the loss of the show’s 4000 some jobs would be a blow against the local production community as well as the many actors who gained needed work via the show’s constant call for new characters.

Update: Here’s a link to the original NYT article with the 4000 job loss estimate.
