Images from your cellphone camera might no longer be a poor alternative to a DSLR if Menlo Park-based InVisage Technologies Quantum Film technology works as well as advertised.
There are a number of articles that have hit the Web, but this Wired one gives a good overview of the technology. According to an article in the NY Times yesterday, it might take 18 months for the technology to come to market, but the result is said to push far beyond increasingly limited CMOS and CCD technology.
It’s claimed that a 3-megapixel cellphone camera might offer 12-megapixels of greatly improved capture. I’m most intrigued by the claim that it will work well under different lighting conditions, something current cellphones are universally awful in handling.
