City Council Pledges Tech Industry Support

Christine Quinn City Council Pledges Tech Industry Support

In her State of the City speech Thursday afternoon, City Council Speaker Christine Quinn outlined plans to create and sustain jobs in the city, including specific plans to boost the tech industry through partnerships, donated facilities, and some direct investment by the City.

The four-point program is designed to create more jobs, foster innovation, buoy up small businesses, modify the taxing structure, and increase the number of qualified employees.

New York is falling behind other cities in supporting technology startups, Quinn said. To address that, one initiative--NYC High-Tech Connect--will help connect inventors with investors, workspaces, and other resources. The effort, patterned after a program in San Diego, will pair nascent tech companies with successful entrepreneurs.

Small manufacturers also get attention via a $10 million investment fund that hopes to transform vacant industrial buildings into factories.

The whole State of the City address, in fact, was focused on various on going and soon to launch projects aimed at lifting the city out of its current economic downturn. You can download her address here.
