You can ask smart questions at the HPA Tech Retreat
If you can afford the time and expense, anyone involved in planning for the future of production, post, and distribution will want to be at Hollywood Post Alliance Tech Retreat.
Now in its 16th offing, this February event, held in the warm surrounds of Rancho Las Palmas in Rancho Mirage, California, draws top technologists from the major manufacturers—Sony, Panasonic, Grass Valley, Apple, Autodesk, Quantel, and Adobe among them, as well as facility owners, technologists, academics, and other media geeks.
Mark Schubin organizes and emcees much of the event, so the tech talk runs at a high level; you can read his prospectus of the multi-day event here.
Unlike a huge conference such as NAB or even Siggraph, the low number of attendees means there is plenty of time to dive deeply into trends that are normally just flashy headlines. For example February 16, the first day of the conference, includes a four-hour “supersession” 3-D in the Home Is the Answer: What is the Question? with presentations ranging from U. of Cal. Prof Martin Banks lecturing on 3-D & Human Vision to 3-D in the Home: What Just Happened? by Disney’s Leon Silverman.
